New York - The Children’s Aid Society received its ninth consecutive four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest independent charity evaluator, last autumn, and the charity’s leadership states that the ranking has made a difference among donors in tough economic times.
“Donors have told us outright that the Charity Navigator ranking has helped them decide to whom to donate,” said Children’s Aid President and CEO Richard R. Buery, Jr. “The economy has made donors uncertain; this ranking is a touchstone for them.”
Children’s Aid’s Assistant Executive Director of Development Patricia M. Grayson says that a number of donors have used this rating system and as well as others when making their decisions. “A new donor who called in December who was interested in becoming a monthly donor said that he chose Children’s Aid because of our ranking on Charity Navigator. Another loved our services but needed Charity Navigator’s reassurance. We hear this a lot!”
The ranking of four-star charities is based on a charity’s fiscal health and its respect for the privacy of donors. Charity Navigator rates charities by evaluating organizational efficiency and organizational capacity. The site uses a set of financial ratios or performance categories to rate each of these two areas, and issues an overall rating that combines the charity's performance in both areas. Charity Navigator “provides these ratings so that givers can make intelligent giving decisions, and so that the philanthropic community can more effectively monitor itself,” according to its website.
“We are delighted that the highly respected Charity Navigator evaluator has recognized Children’s Aid’s fiscal reliability and efficiency as it serves New York City’s neediest children,” said Children’s Aid’s Buery. “We are confident we can retain our ranking.”
